Chris-
Sorry for the late reply. I failed to see that you had posted a comment.

No doubt that having some sort of training experience from cycling has helped me feel better on the moto. And my wife has helped me hone some of the stuff I do (she's a retired pro cyclist and does some coaching on her own) so having a sounding board to bounce stuff off after a race is really helpful for me.

I hear you on the mental side of things. I have had the same trouble - fast on Wednesday, suck on Sunday. I don't know that I've cured it but for me its all about the pressure I put on myself. There's no pressure when I'm trying new stuff or looking for speed during practice but when I try to do that stuff in a race there's too much pressure for me to pull it off and then I get frustrated and make one mistake after another. My solution for that is to try to catch myself riding like a idiot and to take 5-10 seconds to check out, think about what is going on and then reenter the game. I find that "resetting" is really good for me but I have to 1) recognize I'm riding poorly, and 2) make myself stop and reset.

As for prepping for the mental stuff this time of year, there's nothing that I can do more than be as pumped to ride as I am. Since we haven't ridden in earnest for several months now, being amped to ride isn't too hard for me. I suppose I could over cook it and be so amped that I try too hard too soon and get hurt so perhaps I should be careful of that.

I've got a ton of balance and agility stuff planned in April. That's the stuff I like to do and feel that its made me faster, more confident and safer. More on that in a month or two.

How did you film that? Do you have any track layouts for about an acre of land? I have always wanted to build something like this.

Hey Scott - Cool post on the early season prep. I think it's something that every serious racer can benefit from. It's a great advantage coming from a cycling background to have that core fitness, and knowledge base of how to properly train.

My biggest shortcomings have always been mental. Seems I could always ride well during training rides, but struggled during races. The guys I would school during training rides would smoke me at a race. Frustrating as hell!

I'm wondering if you do anything on the mental side to prepare for the upcoming season.

FYI - tons of snow here in Durango. Hopefully going to get a ride in at the Dunes tomorrow, but doesn't sound too promising. At least Supercross is on if a ride doesn't come into play.
