Hey Scott, saw the link to your site here in the weekly GNCC Quick Fill. I recognized you immediately from the Discovery Channel shows from a few years ago about Lance. Awesome to see you’re into this as well! I’ve been riding GNCC’s for many years now, and this will be a challenge you’ll never forget. Train your ass off, these tracks are ROUGH! Best of luck to you though, hope to meet you at the races! – Kevin Schuler
Kevin – interesting that you recognized me from TV. Cool that motorcyclists ride bikes and vice versa. We are looking forward to tackling the GNCC races and have a winter of preparation planned. Everyone we talk to says they are pretty difficult courses so we’re doing our best to get ready. Hope to see you at the races! S.
Heya Joe. Thought I posted this a long time ago when I read your post about your knee. Sorry to hear the news, but at least amputation isn’t required, eh? Heal quick like, eh?
Yes, we’ve missed you at the schools but look what you are doing, that is great. It sounds like a life of leisure to me. I think I’m the guy who rides the least of anyone that I know and that is a crime. The cobbler’s family go without shoes.
You are right, we’ve been really busy the last couple of years, almost too many schools but being a gypsy is what it is. Much is the same but much is also different than it used to be. I think we’ve ironed out a lot of stuff to make the days go a lot smoother for the students and we use a lot more coaches now than before. What a project it is keeping up with your passions.
Good grief Joe! Stop saying things like ‘that might not sound like much to you..’ would you? Recovery is what it is, and every little step back to normalcy is a big deal. So there.
I’m enjoying your blog, Joe. It makes me thankful for our 4 deg C and raining…uhhhh But seriously, in the January issue of Decline, Fabien Barel wrote a very inspirational story of his 2007 World’s experience. Enjoy and happy training! Merry Christmas!
Hey Joe and Scott- I spent a little time with Roger Bird a couple of days ago changing ice tires, and he told me you guys are going at the nationals and directed me to our site. NICE WORK! Represent D16! I hope all goes well for you this season.
Nice work on the K-nee Joe V! I’d say goofy too, in regards to the masses collecting where they do. We are super excited to watch how the GNCC’s will develop for the 40 somethings.
Maybe you could have the radiator repaired and set it aside as a spare. Or repair it and secretly swap it with one of Scotty’s unmolested ones. Yup, now that’s a plan…
So…um…I was going to ask what you do with the…uh…bodily urges during such a long race. Now I know. I thought maybe a pair of Depends would be a good idea, but your solution works just as well. It’s mostly water anyway, right? Anyway, brilliant stuff. You guys are nuts. The stories killer. And I can’t get enough! But you really need to get one of the V. girls to be staff photographer.
The snow is still deep here. Nearly up to my knees. At this rate, the 24 hour race I have on my calendar for Memorial Day weekend will be wet and muddy. I miss riding trails.
We both harbored a fear of arriving to a trailer and van that had been ransacked with huge chunks of our gear missing and a bike that had been vandalized.
Welcome to the world of the demo team. This is the thought we wake up with every morning when we are on the road. You’ll remember that this is exactly what happened to me at Crankworx last year.
Stoked that you are hammering at the GNCC’s. Went for a great moto ride today here on Vancouver Island. High rivers and still a bit of snow but stoked to get out in the cedars for some tight woods. Enjoyed putting a good beat-down on my riding partner. Maybe I missed it but you should post your 2008 race schedule on your website… are you thinking of any ISDE qualifiers? Anyway, I enjoy checking out your site every now and then. Have fun racing!
Too heavy to land?? That’s bull. He probably overshot the landing and had to go around. Nothing wrong with that. Too heavy? Despite flying an extra hour? Pffttt.
Joe,
I enjoyed meeting you on the starting line at Loretta’s GNCC.It was fun racing with you.I just wanted to say thanks for the fun stories.Keep up the great job.
P S I know have you hurt.
James Williamson
We are having a good time with this. Hope to see you at a few races.
We will miss the next 2 races, due to a few circumstances. Scott’s wife is going to have a baby in the next week or so, and that means we will miss Ohio. My oldest daughter is graduating from High School on the same weekend as Sparta, so I will miss that one. I am going to do a couple of local races in between there, and I will post some stories from those.
But, we will be back at the GNCC thing in Yadkinville. See you there.
You are right. Crummy photo, I know. That is a 2009 Trek Top Fuel carbon. It has 100mm of travel, and all the new Trek technologies (Full Floater, ABP, EVO link), but it also has a bunch of technologies from the Madone. E2 steerer, seat mast and 90mm wide BB.
As I am putting together my first Suzuki offroad 2-stroke, I would like to say thank you so much for listing the products and settings of your bikes. You would think that sponsors would request such information be readily available to consumers. Thanks again, Eric
Hey Scott (remember me from WI harescrambles in 2007?) nice project! If you come up to the sandbox again e-mail me to let me know as I only live 30 min. west and ride there all the time, well I am planning to (I just got a new bike a week ago. This past week was my first ride at the box this season but the past season I rode there quite a bit) I’ll swing over there and we can tear it up!
Hey Nate! I remember you! Looks like you had a great year of racing in D23. Won some enduros and hare scrable races?! What is your plan for 2009 – focus on enduros? Have you considered doing the OMA or GNCC series? You definitely have the speed to do well at national events.
My parents live west of MSP so I’m up your way from time to time. I still haven’t ridden at the Sandbox arena but will some day. I’ll be sure to give you a call before I drive up. Keep in touch and say hey to your dad for me. Does he still have the van? How many miles are on it now?!
Thanks so much. If everybody had a bike spec listing as organized as you guys, and were as willing to share info, I truly believe sponsors would see an increase in their sales.
Sincerely,
Eric V. & K. Ashley Muth
Have you and Scott ever considered riding in the 24 hour challenge. It is held in Alabama in the mounth of June. Go to the web site and see what you think. http://WWW.24hourchallenge.com.You would make a great 2 man team. Thanks
Yes! Those drops are making me excited about February. I need to borrow a Remedy. Oh, and dig out the limb guards. And decide whether or not to use my new full face, or get a DJ helmet.

I noticed you ran short sleeves some times last year.
Do you ever wear elbow guards? I cringe looking at the photos with your bare elbows out there but then again, I have fallen down a few more times than you have.
Have fun this weekend and I hope the trailer helps.
Sounds like you got most of it sorted out. How big is your tank? My stock tank is 2.8 gal and I think it will work for the WI races. Remember we always burn more gas at Dyracuse because of the sand. Maybe just take a pit crew to Dyracuse to help with a gas stop and maybe you’ll be fine the rest of the races.
I am working on my bike tonight. My plastic came in as well as the skid plate (carbon), pipe guard (eline carbon), HD tubes and a few other little goodies.
Hope the ATV’s didn’t get in your way. You should come down with me to the 6-days qualifier next month. You’ll get to ride all that is behind those perimeter fences….
Rog-
I haven’t worn elbow protection for several years now. I have fallen and dinged my wrists and hands but luckily not my elbows. Seems I fall on my head and hips mostly (this was true when I played sports in high school and college too). I recognize how exposed my elbows are and how long it would take to recuperate from an injury but that hasn’t stopped me from taking the risk.

The video of Marquette looked great! However you only showed the easy part. What about the walls of slimy moss covered rocks or should I say moon rocks. I broke my tripple clamp in that section 8 years ago. I guess trees will do that to you. Come to think of it I think thier is a conspiracy among trees against me, ahhhhhhhhhhh fond memories it makes me want to get my bike out of moth balls. Good grief…The lengths some people will go to for some sympathy. Sheesh.
I’ll make sure and mention how overwhelmingly intimidated by you I am in my next blog post. Honest. No really, I will.
Oh, and 1 non-work related blog, 1 Flickr page, and one sort of blog thing for work that hasn’t really worked yet.
So there. And here’s a little something to help you recover more quickerer like:

Details! We need details. So surgery is inevitable then? Did they say what’s torn?
Heya Joe. Thought I posted this a long time ago when I read your post about your knee. Sorry to hear the news, but at least amputation isn’t required, eh? Heal quick like, eh?
I went all Canadian there for a second.
Good work Scott. I always found it hard to lead. Glad you toned it down and did not ride over your head, that’s smart. rm
Gosh, am I allowed to heckle someone post-operatively? The opportunity is so RIGHT THERE!

Congrats!
Glad to hear that you are progressing so well. I ran into Scott yesterday at the Boulder cross race.
Pretty sweet..

Come on Chrissy, don’t feed his ego like that. It’ll just take me that much longer to put it in check again.
Your normal look? Oooooh! Standing around and letting someone else do the work. I see it now. ;~)
I find that in addition to feeling that way about Illinois, I feel that way about most other States as well. At least I’m consistent.
Mucho congratulationso. Glad that you are getting back on the other kind of bike.
Trade you. It’s pouring down here. I mean proper Spring shower pouring. I’ll take that snow. At least it would cover the slopes again.

I should have waited until later to call!
After all the prep, and its a van flat that is a show stopper. The next stop you make should be at a Culvers custard stand. Hooray and good luck

Sweet. Great post and Good luck.
glad you are there safe — this is going to be WAY too much fun keeping up with you guys…..have a blast and I will be checking here every day!
But did you have fun? I’m so very proud of you – my no.1 son!!
Whoa. I remember being worked after two hours of snowmobile riding. This sounds like torture. No mention of fun in this post.

Good on you and Scotty
Sweet Scotty. Glad to hear you had a hard time for once. The rest of us would have kicked out our spokes to ensure a DNF after one lap.
BTW, watch your back. That Joe is schemeing again. Shhhh I didn’t tell you.

Good luck this weekend!
Good luck and stay warm!
Joe appears to have a bit of food or dirt stuck to his chin there…
Way to go Scotty! Third in the second race of the year!? That’s fantastic!
Awesome result. This is going to get even more interesting as your point total grows. Good Luck.
Joe & Scott,
It was great meeting you both in FL. That’s a tough first race after a winter off! I hope you’re hands held up.
We (my partner Sam and I) were very impressed with the bikes/graphics, and could not be happier as a sponsor of your team.
Good luck with the series!

No qualifiers for us. Just stuff where there is a start and finish line, and you just go as fast as you can in between there.
Joe
Sorry to hear about the injury, Scotty. Healing vibes coming your way.
Come on give me some more reports you are lagging behind. Isnt this your fulltime job?

Thanks for the good vibes. I’ll be back at it soon.

Don’t worry. You don’t look 60.
way to go Liz and Joe!
From the looks of the photo above, Liz forgot to bring Joe’s meds to France.
Great story!

There are so many heckling opportunities in this post that I feel it would be unfair to indulge…
You need some more olive pesto, I’m sure.
I’ll be following the schedule with interest. Mostly to look for heckling opportunities, but somewhere deep down, I’m also wishing you luck.
Have a good time. So 1 lap, is that what I read? 1 lap in 3 hours? WOW!
You call your voicemail because you have no friends, poor guy. It’s because you are so intimidating, obviously.
Oh boy, I have had those days too.
Good job getting out there.
I’ll be happy to train in the rain with you.
Good job!
Can’t wait to read more. What is the mullet potential?

Joe, why does the enduro bike need lights? Is there a rule that you have to fall in line with? The enduros here in CO don’t, only spark arrestors.
Happy New Year
